Bamboo Wind Instruments

In this site you will find a wide selection of bamboo wind instruments: sax, clarinets and flutes.

All the wind instruments on this site are made of bamboo and seasoned for over 20 years. These are simplified versions of instrument in use today.

The SAX is the first family. The main feature of the SAX is the conical chamber of the instrument. The sound is obtained by a single reed mouthpiece. The reeds used are the commercial ones. Because this is a simplified version of a SAX it needs very soft reeds (usually the n°1 in commerce). The collection includes very small SOPRANO SAXES, CONTRALT, TENOR and extends until the BARITONE SAX. To better explain: the smallest is less than 50 cm long and the biggest can be up to 2,5 m long.

The CLARINET is the second family. It's main feature is that, unlike the SAX, it has a cylindrical chamber. Like the SAX, a reed mouthpiece is used to create the sound. This distinctive feature makes the instrument behave acoustically in an anomalous manner compared to other wind instrument; is of all the series, meaning that blowing in a certain way they play the fundamental sound. By increasing the pressure we obtain (in theory) a scale of notes that are one octave higher, so they are the second harmonic. The CLARINET, on the contrary, does not play the second harmonic and all the harmonics of the same order (second, fourth, sixth, eighth etc.). so by blowing with more pressure on the reed you get a scale of notes that is higher than the fundamental one of a twelfth rather than an octave, because it is a scale obtained from the 3rd harmonic. This anomaly depends simply one the fact that the chamber is cylindrical, and behaves as if it is a closed cane. Instead it is actually an open cane. For this reason the other anomalous phenomenon is that the sound that comes out is one octave lower than a SAX of equal length.

There is also a curiosity: the CLARISAX which is a hybrid between a CLARINET and a SAX.

The FLUTES family includes TRANSVERSE FLUTES and STRAIGHT FLUTES with notch (such as ANDEAN QUENA and JAPANESE SHAKUHACHI). They can be in different sizes and tones.

Bambusblasinstrumente
